Description
English: Crystal-clear skies greeted NASA’s Terra satellite as it passed over South America on December 2, 2018. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board that satellite acquired a stunning true-color view of Chile and Argentina on that date.

The border between Chile (west) and Argentina (east) courses through the snow-topped Andes Mountains. Chile’s topography drops quickly from the tall Andean Peaks to the Pacific Ocean and is colored with the brilliant greens of verdant vegetation. East of the Andes the land drops to the Patagonian Plateau, a semi-arid scrub plateau that covers about 260,000 square miles (673,000 square kilometers) of southern South America between the Andes and the Atlantic Ocean.

Notable features in Argentina include the confluence of the Limay River (south) and Neuquen River (north) to form the Rio Negro. The Rio Negro, which flows generally east-southeast for about 400 miles (640 km) to empty in the Atlantic Ocean, provides hydroelectricity and irrigation for much of the region. Along Argentina’s east coast, the Valdez Peninsula juts dramatically into the Atlantic Ocean. This peninsula, a nature reserve, provides a protected home for whales, sea lions, elephant seals and other wildlife.
