SPRING CATALOGUE OF SEEDS, BULBS AND PLANTS FOR 1915- 69
Text Appearing After Image:
NeW Giapt Ha^dy Grin^sop Winter Rfylibarb. The perfection in Rhubarbs.—So vigorous and rapid in growth that it is ready for the table in three months from seed, or two months from roots. This is in all respects just like Burbank's Crimson Winter Rhubarb, except it is four times larger, and perfectly hardy in the extreme north. Plants of this wonderful Rhubarb sold two years ago by an agent of the originator for $5.00 each. Mr. Wagner the originator says it is " more rugged than the Crimson Winter and fully twice the size of Linnaeus or any old variety." It has the fine crimson color and sprightly delicious flavor of Burbank's Crimson Winter and is available for use from earliest spring to late in December. The stalks sometimes attain a length of three feet and weigh over one pound. Sixty stems picked from one plant at a single picking weighed thirty pounds. Such a great number of stalks from one plant are possible as the plant divides so rapidly into numerous crowns. It will of course supersede the old Crimson Winter as fast as planters can get the stock. Those who set a few plants now will reap a rich harvest, not <only on the Pacific and in the South, but in the North as well where the old variety is not reliable. It is the earliest of all Rhubarb by a long way and fit for use not only in the spring, but all through the summer and fall. As fast as staiks are puiied fiesh ones will take their place. In the Southern and Pacific states it may be used all the year round, requiring only water in dry localities to keep it growing. It is particularly fine in winter. Color bright crimson except new stalks on young plants. In quality this Rhubarb is simply superb, fully equal in flavor to the finest berries. The stalks are not so bulky, soft and watery as most other kinds, and the skin is so thin and tender that it is not neccessary to remove it, and when cooked a beautiful crimson-colored sauce is the resr.it, looking, as well as tasting, like berries. Flavor sprightly and re- freshing, combining that cf the Raspberry and Strawberry, but greatly superior to either as a cooked fruit. In fact, it makes the most delicious sauce and pies we have ever tasted. Price of Roots, 20c. each; 4 for 50c; 12 for $i.co ; 100 for $7.00. Price of Seed, 15c. per pkt.; 3 pkts., for 40c. From seed sown in open ground in April or May one will get fine large stalks for, cooking as early as July and August. John S. Bond, Shellmouth, Man., Canada, says :— A. E. Jones, Philadelphia, says:—"I raised the most " Your claims for your New Giant Rhubarb seed is fully wonderful and delicious Rhubarb I ever saw in my back justified. I sowed seed early and in August picked 3 to 4 yard from your seed. It was ready to use in a surprisingly lbs., of good stalks from half a dozen plants." short time."
