Summary
[edit]DescriptionChildren are enjoying the Kalavela festival in Palakkad District of Kerala State.jpg |
English: Kalavela is a festival of bull idols that is celebrated in North Kerala and Palakkad district (the Valluvanad region) during the harvest season. Kalavela is a ritual to honor the goddess Bhagavathy, who is the protector of agriculture and fertility. Kalavela is also a form of art and competition among the villagers, who make realistic and impressive bull idols from cloth and hay. The procession moves to the temple with the gigantic bull idols on chariots, dancing to the rhythmic beats of chenda melam and band melam. Kalavela has a long history and cultural significance in Kerala.
