Ancora oggi, nonostante l'invadenza dell'edilizia circostante, che ormai la sovrasta, la chiesa si offre all'osservatore come un puro solido geometrico, definito da linee rette e superfici piane, sensibile solo al variare della luce solare.

Questo effetto doveva essere ancora più accentuato nella situazione primitiva, quando il nitido volume del Sant'Alessandro, interamente di pietre squadrate di calcare bianco (in studiato contrasto con un contesto, sicuramente più povero e almeno in parte costruito in legno), si elevava luminoso come un antico tempio su un piccolo podio (oggi interrato per il livello rialzato della piazza), evocando tanto le architetture descritte nelle Sacre Scritture - la Gerusalemme Celeste, il Tempio di Salomone - quanto l'arte ufficiale dell'Impero Romano, e rappresentando così, al tempo stesso e al più alto grado, la fede e l'autorità del potente committente che aveva voluto la chiesa.
