Il disegno di Leonardo è una delle numerose riflessioni sul tema della pianta centrale, sviluppato da numerosi architetti del Rinascimento Come spesso accade nei disegni architettonici di Leonardo, non è possibile cogliere alcune riferimento formale agli ordini vitruviani, fondamentali invece nelle opere e nella letteratura rinascimentali. Leonardo si concentra piuttosto sulle possibilità espressive dei volumi e delle masse plastiche in relazione alle piante centrali.
