Is it any wonder that the bloodflows quicker through the veins and that thetug of the horses at the bits produces an exhila-ration that leads to a desire for increased speed?Even the beasts feel the spirit of the thing, anddash ahead buoyantly over the broad roadway.Ofher vehicles swarm over the pleasure course—heavy family carriages, in which fat dow-agers are taking an airing; dog carts driventandem by smart young men whose fathershave big bank accounts, and here and there anactual exercising cart with a blooded trotterbetween the shafts—it all makes up a gaypanorama and the probabilities are that ifyou are human you will let out a link in thelines and indulge in a wee bit of a race just tosee if the horseflesh you are in charge of is not

169 just a little better than the next mans. Thiswill go all right until the mounted park police-man motions you to moderate your pace. Hismandate must be obeyed or an arrest and finewill be the result. The policemen are some-times conveniently blind, however, and some-times enjoy a bit of a brush as much as any-body, but really furious driving is againstthe law and will not be tolerated. But the two miles have been passed by thistime and Diversey street and the northern limitof the park is reached. A few yards furtherand it is time to stop, for we have reached thegreat gateway of the famous summer garden,formerly known as Fischers, but which isnow conducted by a gentleman of anothername. No matter what the name is; it is stillFischers just the same. Driving throughthe gates into the grounds a servant takescharge of the team, leaving you at liberty tostroll down to the covered pavilion which abutson the very edge of the lake and sit and drinkin the cooling breeze to your hearts con.te
