Summary
[edit]DescriptionChesterfield Parish Church (9).jpg |
Interior of Chesterfield parish church, St Mary and All Saints, Chesterfield, Derbyshire. This is a Grade I listed building, begun in the 14th century. It has had a number of rebuilds and restorations. for example, in 1874, architect Samuel Rollinson restored the south transept, fitting a new window, and rebuilding a forgotten medieval doorway, Charles Mawer was employed to replace and carve the missing dog-toothed stones from the door's archway. This is an unedited scan of an unused real-photograph postcard with split back in early style, published by Charles E. Nadin, West Bars, Chesterfield. It was taken before the rood screen had been installed. It shows a view from the nave looking east through the chancel arch. You can see the five-light east window of 1843 by William Wailes. On the north side of the chancel arch is the Jacobean pulpit, and on the south side is the brass eagle lectern. In the foreground are the rows of pews. (The restoration by Temple Moore including the removal of the box pews in the side aisles took place between 1896 and 1910. The replica of the original Foljambe chantry chapel screen was installed in the chancel in 1915, but the chancel arch rood screen was installed during or after 1916.) Sources
