개방을 앞둔 청와대
상춘재(常春齋) '상춘재'라는 이름은 ‘항상 봄이 머무는 집’이라는 뜻이다. 제1·2공화국 때 청와대에는 구 본관과 상춘실을 제외하고 별다른 의전용 행사 건물이 없었다. 구 본관의 접견실(약 158㎡), 식당 등을 행사에 사용하였지만 소규모 행사만 치를 수 있었다. 약 66㎡ 정도의 목조 건물인 상춘실의 앞뜰에서는 다과나 만찬 행사를 열었다. 이 상춘실은 본래 조선총독 관사의 별관이며 이름은 매화실(梅花室)이었다. 상춘실은 이승만 전 대 통령이 매화실에 입주하며 고쳐 지은 이름이다. 1977년 12월 박정희 전 대통령의 지시에 따라 1978년 3월 상춘실을 헐고 그 자리에 슬레이트 지붕으로 된 약 73㎡ 규모의 목조 건물을 신축하였으며 그 이름을 상춘재라 하였다. 이후 청와대를 방문하는 외빈에게 우리나라 전통 가옥을 소개하거나, 의전 행사를 위한 목적으로 1982년 11월 기존 건물을 헐고 연면적 417.96㎡ 규모의 한옥을 착공하여 반년 만인 1983년 4월 5일 완공했다. 내부는 대청마루로 된 거실과 온돌방 2개가 있다. 이때 수령 200년 이상 된 춘양목(春陽木: 경북 봉화군 춘양면 일대에서 자생하는 소나무)을 건물의 재목으 로 사용하였다. 「북궐도형」, 「경복궁평면도」, 「신무문외관사배치도」를 현재의 청와대 위성사진에 겹쳐서 보면 상춘재 자리는 융문당 위치와 겹쳐진다. 이를 통해 볼 때 상춘재 자리에 융문당이 있었음을 추정해 볼 수 있다.
