Title |
cheekpiece fragment (front) |
||
Description |
English: Fragment of an Anglo-Scandinavian copper alloy cheekpiece from a bridle bit, flat in section, 6 mm thick, with Ringerike style decoration in the form of a curved stylised dragon or horse head with projecting crest, similar to a the coxcomb of a cockerel, of four points. The head is incised with a defined neck with linear borders and transverse chevrons, a large lentoid eye, with a ring-and-dot for the pupil and iris, and a flaring mouth with projecting tongue defined by engraved rocker-arm lines. This similar to examples of other Type 1 cheekpieces recorded in NMS-FABB83, NMS-040A25 and DEV-CA6EDE.
Williams (2007) illustrates a similar style of openwork and incised decoration on a cheek piece from Gloucestershire on page 3, fig.3a, which is classified as Type 1, referred to as Ringerike style current during the reign of Cnut (1014-1042) and dated from the 11th century. Pedersen (1998) also illustrates a similar example from Sebbursund, Denmark on p.135, fig.4c. |
