Summary
[edit]DescriptionCheadle Heath (Stockport) Station site of 2001783 46e89ec9.jpg |
English: Site of Cheadle Heath (Stockport) Station. View SE, towards Chinley, Sheffield, Derby etc.; ex-Midland, Heaton Mersey - New Mills cut-off, built 1902 to allow direct access to Manchester Central, the Cheshire Lines (CLC) and Liverpool avoiding Stockport. The station, closed on 1/1/67 (goods on 1/7/68), had been a subtantial one of five platforms, serving a local service to/from Manchester Central. The lines were busy also with through express and stopping trains from London (St Pancras) via Derby and from Sheffield (Midland) until 6/3/67, and carried an intensive freight traffic. Manchester Central itself and the line thence from Heaton Mersey were closed on 5/5/69, and from soon after the tracks through the site of Cheadle Heath were reduced to a single line, used mainly for the Tunstead - Northwich limestone trains. This photograph was taken before the inevitable Super-Store grew up, on the right. |
