Title |
English: Chatham Parlor Middle View |
||||
Description |
English: A view of the center of a large room with cream-colored wood paneling and a fireplace. Two exhibit cases are highly visible, one containing a diorama, and the other contains an artillery chest. One exhibit panel sits above the fireplace showing an image of African Americans and a wagon. In the middle of Chatham's former parlor is a diorama depicting the pontoon bridge crossing during the Battle of Fredericksburg, an artillery chest, and a panel showing enslaved people escaping to freedom in Union lines during the spring of 1862. Although approximately 10,000 enslaved people found freedom in Union lines by crossing the Rappahannock River at this time, including many crossing the river right below Chatham, this late-2010s panel is the only exhibit that discusses this transformative moment in history. |
