Summary

[edit]
Description

I have referred to the Caribbean cruise islands as "shopping centers with palm trees." Here is a shopping center with palm trees - Havensight Mall in St. Thomas. The cruise ship pier is 2 miles (3 km) from downtown, Havensight Mall is an alternative to taking a minibus into the town.

Havensight Mall serves two purposes. These shops, which are closest to the cruise ship pier, are mainly for tourists. Several are branches of downtown stores. Other buildings have stores mainly for local residents - a large food store, clothing stores, travel agencies, even a bookstore.

Note the "Keep Left" sign Cars in St. Thomas drive on the left. I assume this is because it was the rule of the road in Denmark when the U.S. bought the Virgin Islands in 1917. It matters little in Charlotte Amalie, because most of the streets downtown are one way. Most of the cars are left hand drive, like those in the U.S.

There are towers for a cable car to the top of the hill in the right background.
