[edit]DescriptionCharing Cross Post Office (16158166376).jpg |
English: A Metropolitan Police constable from Cannon Row police station, London, who should be directing traffic, seems to be reluctantly receiving some sort of pin from a flapper. I think this is at the junction of Morley's Hill and The Strand outside Charing Cross Post Office, which occupied the ground floor at the south end of Morley's Hotel. When the Hotel was demolished in the early 1930s, South Africa House was built on the same site, so this location in now the main entrance to South Africa House on the corner of the Strand and Trafalgar Square. The newspaper billboards indicate that this may be June 1929 when King George V was returning to London from Bognor where he had been convalescing after an illness. They also indicate the new Government of Ramsay MacDonald which was elected in late May. If it is June then it was either raining or it was a cool day.
I had originally thought that the location was outside the Post Office in Parliament Street which had similar railings and a basement area. |
