La légende rapporte que trois embarcations descendant du Quercy toutes chargées de blé, de vin, et de fruits, furent arrêtées par une force mystérieuse au beau milieu du Lot, à la hauteur du pont. Malgré les efforts conjugués, les coups de rames donnés, rien ne peut faire avancer la flottille L'un des marins se décida alors à plonger pour voir ce qui pouvait bien les retenir. On le vit réapparaître portant une statuette : c'était l'image de la vierge. A peine fut elle posée dans la gabarre que les bateaux reprirent leurs cours. On transporta l'effigie sur l'autel du couvent le plus proche. Le lendemain elle en avait disparu. Les marins replongèrent à l'endroit ou elle avait été repêchée la veille et la remontèrent. Il fut alors décidé de construire une chapelle en aplomb du lieu de découverte. Elle devint un lieu de pèlerinage et de vénération pour les bateliers qui ne manquaient pas, à chaque passage, de la saluer en levant leurs rames pour lui rendre' hommage. Elle recut le nom de Notre Dame de toute liesse ou de toute joie.
