Chapel of St Gabriel

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Chapel of St Gabriel This tiny chapel was originally a parish church to the small community of Stanton St Gabriel, and dates from the mid 13th century. By the end of the 18th century services were held here once a month and some christenings and marriages were still taking place in the early 19th century. Soon after, it was abandoned and became a "receiving house for smuggled kegs", with brandy, tobacco and silks from France being rowed ashore on the nearby deserted beaches. By 1880, the building was still intact with a thatched roof, but in the early 20th century it became a roofless ruin. The chapel now belongs to the National Trust and is well maintained.
