English: ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. — To celebrate and prepare for the beginning of Hanukkah, the Religious Support Office hosted a drive-through celebration at the main post chapel Dec. 9.
Rabbi Chesky Tenenbaum, director of the Jewish Uniformed Service Association of Maryland, assisted with the event and gave guests a kit which included a Hanukkah guide, a menorah, a 2021 Jewish holiday calendar, a dreidel, a jelly doughnut, chocolate gelt coins and candies. Guests also received Hanukkah decorations. This year, Hanukkah began the evening of Dec. 10 and ends the evening of Dec. 18. Hanukkah, also known as the “Festival of Lights,” commemorates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem at the time of the Maccabean Revolt against the Seleucid Empire in the 160s BC. The holiday is observed by lighting the menorah for eight nights and saying special prayers, or blessings. Other festivities include playing the game of dreidel, gift-giving and eating oil-based foods, like doughnuts or latkes, a type of potato pancake. By Rachel Ponder |
