Marie is a former cutter. She used to cut five girls a month when they were about 6-years-old. Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C) has been illegal in Burkina Faso since 1996 and Marie was reported to the police. She was sentenced to a year in jail and had to pay a hefty fine. “I cut girls because tradition demanded it,” says Marie. “But the health workers I spoke to when I was in prison changed my mind about cutting. If I meet people who want to cut their children now I tell them what I learnt.” The UK is working to reduce the practice of FGM/C by 30% in at least 10 countries in Africa in the next 5 years.
