LOVE of maritime enterj)rise is one of thosewell-known characteristics of British youth, which have led to innumerable instances of dar-ing* intrepidity on the seas around our coasts,as well as the most distant parts of the ocean. This quality of mind, to which Britain owes somuch of her supremacy in the scale of nations, has been seldom more strikingly manifested thanin the case of Captain Cook, a man who, from the humblestrank in life, and after encountering the difficulties which usuallylie in the path of a sailor, rose, by dint of good behaviour, intelli-gence, and the energy of his character, to the highest honoursof his profession. As an inspiring page in general biography,we offer a sketch of the life of this distinguished individual.James Cook was born in a mud hut at Marton, in the northNo, 40. 1 XIFE OF CAPTAIN COOK. riding of Yorkshire, 27tli October 1728. His father was anagricultural servant, who, with his wife, bore a most unexception-able character for honesty and industry
