Summary

[edit]
Description Introduced, warm-season, annual, spreading to almost erect, densely-hairy herb; generally less than 10 cm tall. Plants are green in moist conditions, but increasingly red if stressed. Leaves are oppositely arranged, have 3 strong longitudinal veins and are 1-4 cm long; interpetiolar stipules present. Flowerheads consist of dense clusters of tiny (about 1 mm long) flowers in the axils of upper leaves; they are surrounded by an involucre and containing 1 female flower and 8–10 male flowers; perianth absent. Flowering is in spring and summer. A native to Central America, it is found in disturbed areas or where ground cover is low (e.g. crops, pugged soils, sandy river flats). A minor component of pastures and is usually an indicator of disturbance and poor competition. Used as a treatment for asthma in herbal medicine, hence its name. There is no information on its value for grazing, although this would be expected to be very little due to its limited abundance and lack of bulk. Simply controlled through maintenance of good ground cover. Hand pulling or spraying is usually ineffective as it quickly sets large amounts of seed.
