Par sa position aux confins du Maine, de l'Anjou et de la Touraine, Le Lude est l'un des châteaux de la Loire situés les plus au nord. Le château du Lude, tel qu'il apparaît aujourd'hui, est constitué de trois ailes, encadrées de puissantes tours rondes, où se mêlent les styles Renaissance, néoclassique et néogothique, même si des traces subsistent de la forteresse médiévale. Les traces de l'appareil défensif érigé au Moyen Âge sont visibles dans la partie basse du château, dans les douves.
