Châlons-en-Champagne (Marne). Cirque, avenue Général-Leclerc (4e quart 19e siècle). Le cirque de Châlons fait partie des huit derniers cirques en dur qui subsistent en France. Le projet de construire un cirque en dur à Châlons remonte à la dernière décenie du XIXe siècle. La conception du bâtiment est confiée à l'architecte départemental Louis Gillet, auteur de nombreux bâtiments à Châlons. Louis Gillet impose sa construction en béton armé, procédé innovant mis en place par la société Hennebique avec laquelle il a de forts liens familiaux. Les travaux ne débutent en 1898 et sont pris en charge par une société par actions privée, créée pour l'occasion. Le cirque est inauguré le 16 avril 1899. Le bâtiment abritera un atelier de camouflage pendant la 1ère Guerre mondiale. Après la 1ère Guerre mondiale, le cirque est transformé en salle de cinéma. En 1938, la ville dissout la société par actions et municipalise les loàcaux qui sont très dégradés. Pejndant la 2ème Guerre mondiale, le cirque sert d'entrepôt. Après la guerre, les locaux sont loués à des associations sportives. En 1986, Les bâtiments abritent le Centre National des Arts du Cirque, qui forme chaque année, une vingtaine d'étudiants. Depuis 2012, Centre National des Arts du Cirque participe au Bac L - Option Arts du cirque dispensé par le Lycée Pierre Bayen de Châlons-enChampagne. Le cursus en trois ans mène à une licence mention "arts". Le cirque a été entièrement restauré en 2010.
