Title |
Ceramic Vessel Sherd - Corner Base |
||
Description |
English: A single sherd from a ceramic vessel. The sherd is from the area where the base curves upwards to form the wall. Weight 7.28g, thickness of the base 6.71mm, thickness of the wall just above the base 6.88mm. Maximum height of the sherd 23.55mm. Use of a rim chart indicates that the vessel base had a diameter of approximately 120.00mm and that about 9.5% of the circumference of the base survives. The sherd has a mid-orangey oxidised inner surface and orangey mid-grey reduced outer surface. It is difficult to determine the nature of the ceramic fabric as mud still adheres to all of the broken edges, however it looks as though a thin layer of the inner surface of the sherd is missing in places and this reveals that a large amount of ground up shell has been used as an inclusion to the clay. In a couple of places the shelly inclusions are approximately 3.30mm x 3.30mm in size. Shelly ware can be difficult to date as it was in use from the Iron Age through to the Medieval periods. |
