Title
Ceramic Greyware Gaming Piece
Description
English: An artefact of secondary use as a circular ceramic counter/gaming piece. This carefully formed disc is formed from a sherd of Roman greyware vessel and has a ground edge. The gaming piece weighs 7.1g, has a diameter of 30.79mm and thickness of 6.15mm. Finds Liaison Officer Rob Collins suggests that the counter probably dates to the 4th century AD when the reuse of 2nd century vessel sherds often from Samian or greyware vessels was relatively common practice.

See Excavations at Stonea Cambridgeshire 1980-85, Jackson, R.P.J. & Potter, T.W. 1996, p.488-9, fig.178, no.1 & 2 and Colchester Archaeological Report 2: The Roman small finds from excavations in Colchester 1971-9, Crummy, N. 1983, p.93-5, fig.96-98.
