Centre of the Queensferry Blue Bridge

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Centre of the Queensferry Blue Bridge. This is the centre of the Queensferry bascule bridge where the two halves interconnect. The two halves of the bridge used to lift up to allow tall vessels to pass underneath, however, as tall ships no longer pass up the river, wedges have now been welded in place to prevent the bridge opening - see 1133752. Because metal expands in the heat of the sun movement in the huge structure still has to be provided for, so, in the centre, there are metal slider blocks that also prevent the bridge opening but at the same time allow for expansion - see 1135326 In the far distance it is just possible to see the support for the latest Dee crossing, the Flintshire Bridge.
