Summary

[edit]
Description Introduced, warm-season, annual or biennial, hairless herb. Stems are erect, slender and to 50 cm tall. Leaves form a rosette at the plant’s base and are oppositely arranged up the stems. Flowerheads are dense and regularly branched, with flowers in pairs. Flowers are pale red to dark pink and form a tube, with lobes 5-6 mm long; the tube is more than 1½ times the length of the sepals. Flowering is in summer. A native of Europe, it is a weed of pastures, woodlands, gardens and roadsides. Within pastures, it is mostly found in low abundance along fence lines, around stockyards and other areas of low ground cover. Of little importance for livestock grazing and does not require control.
