TheMediaeval period receives some attention, but the greater partof the time is devoted to the modern period. Principles of Education—One year, two periods perweek. This course is synthetic, gathering up and attempting toformulate the principles underlying the science of education.The most important principles which biology, physiology,psychology, and sociology have contributed to the science ofeducation will be considered and their application to educa-tional problems indicated. The following are some of thetopics to be considered: The significance of evolution for edu-cation ; the aims of education; the evolution of the curriculumand the principles which should underlie the selection of sub-ject matter; the principles underlying the learning process;the maturing of the nervous system, physical growth and de- — 2i4 —

velopment, fatigue, and their bearing on educational prob-lems; principles of moral education. There will be no specialtext used in this course but extensive library work will berequired. School Administration—One Semester. The first fourweeks will be devoted to a consideration of school roommanagement; then will follow a discussion of some of thelarger problems as follows: Classification and promotion ofpupils, the relation of the school to the home and to the com-munity, the improvement of teachers in practice, the ethics ofschool craft, special schools for defective and delinquents,open air schools, the organization of industrial education,sanitary conditions, medical inspection of schools, sources ofmaterials, etc. This course consists of lectures, reports, anddiscussions. Elementary Methods—This course is given only in thespring term and is especially suited to the needs of thosestudents who have been teaching or expect to teach the nextyear, and have not the courses in psych
