Summary
[edit]DescriptionCastleton High Street - geograph.org.uk - 56203.jpg |
English: Castleton High Street. The stone post on the right is celebrating Castleton Cheese Fair. In the late 19c/early 20c most farmers around the North York Moors each produced about two tons of cheese per year and the annual Castleton Cheese Fair in October was the place to sell. The whole of the High Street was lined with waggons selling cheese during the fair.
In 1906 Castleton cheese was supplied to the table of Queen Victoria and Edward, Prince of Wales. Cheese making fell into decline after the Milk Marketing Board was instituted and had practically ceased by 1946.
