Title |
Cast copper alloy thimble |
||
Description |
English: Copper-alloy beehive-shaped thimble, probably made from stamped sheet metal (less likely cast) with individually drilled holes dating from the late medieval or, more probably, the early post-medieval period, i.e. c. AD1500-1600. The thimble is complete, with two bands and grooves around the lower edge and c. 250 individually drilled perforations, made by a 'thimbler'. It was probably made from sheet metal and is now very slightly bent. It was found by the edge of the field, where, so it is said, in later medieval times the women sat to do needlework whils their husbands and other male relatives were working in the field, using as much daylight as they could. |
