Title
Cast copper alloy animal bell (crotal or rumbler)
Description
English: Cast copper alloy bell fragment dating from the post-medieval or early modern period, that is from c. 1600-1800. The bell is made from two cast copper-alloy hemispheres which are soldered together around the centre to complete the bell. Each hemisphere has two soundholes, the lower two are also connected by a slit. The top hemisphere had a sturdy handle which is square in shape, with a round cross section. There would have been an iron pea inside to make the 'ringing sound', but the pea is now missing. This is probably because there is damage to the bottom of the bell and a chunk of it (to either side of the slit) is missing, big enough for the pea to have dropped out.
