Title
Cast copper-alloy S-shaped brooch
Description
English: A very small cast copper alloy S-shaped or S-form brooch, possibly West Brigantian, dating from the 1st century AD. The brooch is small and nearly complete: only the pin is missing. The brooch is S-shaped and has a black reverse. It has a central moulding and smaller mouldings at the terminals. The design resembles that of two cornucopiae joined in the centre by their mouths. There are remains of the (probably hinged) spring and foot plate on the reverse, but they are now incomplete and the pin is missing. These brooches were probably prototypes of the more elaborate and bigger Dragonesque brooches which date from c. AD75-175..
