roughly rolled,the films of earth being limited to a maximum thickness of 6 inches. Onereadily calculates the number ofsquare yards that must be rolled asin excess of 36,000,000. This is about12 square miles of surface. It willbe understood, too, that a steam rollerwould be liable to sink down into thework when operating. To providefor such a contingency as this it isnecessary to employ very powerfulmachines. It is said, for example,that horse-drawn rollers are unsuit-able for this work, probably becauseof inability to provide sufficient man-ageable power to operate rollers ofthe desired weight. The ordinarysteam roller is also inadequate be-cause of the severity of the con-ditions. To meet the demands at theAshokan Dam the Monarch RoadRoller Company (18 Old Slip, NewYork City) was commissioned by thecontractors to construct ten especiallypowerful machines. The heating sur-face in the boilers is said to be doublethe usual practice, and the power ofthe engines is increased accordingly.
