Where the lattercan be used, the only considerations ofreal moment are Nos. 5 and 7, thoughdevices for prevention of slippingshould not be such as to damage theroads. The problem of how to pre-vent spinning and side slipping is,perhaps, the greatest which confrontsall motor users. In the case of those vehicles usingpneumatic tires, the difficulty is metby a variety of devices, some of whichare incorporated in the tire, some areloose attachments at the rim of thewheel, while others are mechanicalcontrivances entirely independent ofthe wheel. These various devices are undertrial at the time of writing, and morewill probably be known of their effi-cacy before this appears in print; butit is doubtful if any of these methodswould be of practical value when ap-plied to the intermediate class of vehi-cle using solid rubber tires, and cer-tainly they would be absolutely uselessfor the prevention of skidding ofheavy vehicle wheels.
