Summary
[edit]DescriptionCasque of the Southern Cassowary (12340758074).jpg | This is the casque (helmet) of the large Southern Cassowary at the Penang bird park. I have put in enough shots of the bird itself in my KL Bird Park and Jurong Bird Park albums, and so will limit myself to this one photograph of the bird in this album. The Southern Cassowary, also known as Double-wattled Cassowary, Australian Cassowary or Two-wattled Cassowary, is a large flightless black bird. It is to the Emu, Ostrich, and the genus Rhea. Cassowaries have a horn-like brown casque, measuring 13 to 16.9 cm (5.1 to 6.7") high, that sits atop the head. The species forages on the forest floor for fallen fruit and is capable of safely digesting some fruits toxic to other animals. They also eat fungi, and some insects and small vertebrates. The Southern Cassowary is a solitary bird, that pairs only in breeding season, which takes place in late winter or spring.Cassowaries are very shy, but when provoked they are capable of inflicting injuries to dogs and people, although fatalities are extremely rare.
