Fy: Apocyanaceae Syn:Thevetia peruviana (Pers)Merr; Syn: Cascabela thevetia (L)Lippold Distribution:Planted as a hedgeplant or as an ornamental plant.Native of Tropical America and naturalised in Tropics. The flowers are used for pooja in Lord Shiva's temples. Description: 3-5mts tall small trees. Leaves4.5-12x0.5-1.2cm linear- lanceolate, acute,base cuneate,sessile or subsessile, coriaceous. Flowers 3-4cm long,2-3cm across,bright yellow or orrange yellow or white in few flowered cymes.Calyx lobes 5, glandular within, corolla showy,5 funnel-shaped, overlapping to left,Stamens 5, inserted in the corolla tube, sagittate, free,Ovary 2 distinct partially united carpels. Styles are united, stigma entire. Fruit angular fleshy drupe. The seed is poisonous but if used in small amounts it is cardiac. |
