Carte-de-visite photograph of William E. Smith. Smith took over as captain of Company E, 4th Georgia Infantry, on the retirement of Captain Rust. Smith was a small man, and as a child a Frenchman had called him, "Mon petite," which his friends transformed into "Tete." But Tete Smith Served as captain only briefly, for scarcely two months after taking office, on June 25, 1862, he lost his right leg in a minor action at King's School House, Virginia. In August, he resigned and returned home where he returned to his law practice until elected to the Confederate Congress. He served in that capacity until the Confederate government collapsed. |
