Deutsch: Nicht weit vom Mannheimer Wasserturm entfernt, steht das Carl Benz Denkmal aus dem Jahr 1933. Es erinnert an die Erfindung des Automobils durch Carl Benz. Seine Erfindung war der dreirädrige »pferdelose Wagen«, für den er 1886 das Patent erhielt. Das Denkmal von Max Laeuger besteht aus einem Kalkstein-Quader auf dem das Relief eines Mannes im Arbeitskittel zu sehen ist, der vor dem ersten Automobil steht. Allerdings ist das Relief nur wenig erhaben und daher schlecht zu erkennen.
Wesentlich besser zu erkennen ist eine Bronzenachbildung des ersten Automobils, die 2008 nur wenige Meter entfernt als Geschenk der Daimler AG aufgestellt wurde. Das Denkmal ist eines der ersten, das für einen Techniker aufgestellt wurde (Bis dahin waren Denkmäler nur für Herrscher oder Künstler üblich). Berta Benz soll bei der Einweihung gesagt haben »So e Nachthemd hat er nie getrage!« |
