Summary

[edit]
Description Part of a letter/postcard, dated 15 July 1944 (stamped 21 July 1944), sent from the Auschwitz concentration camp in German-occupied Poland to a recipient in Hungary. The author was Jane Haining, a Scottish missionary in Budapest, Hungary, who died in Auschwitz on 17 July 1944, after being arrested by the Gestapo in April that year in Budapest. The recipient of the letter was Margit Prém, head of the Scottish mission school for Jewish and Christian children in Budapest, where Haining had worked as a matron until her arrest. Haining died a few days after sending the letter. The original is in the Jane Haining archive at the National Library of Scotland.

The copyright term in the country of origin, Poland, is life of the author plus 70 years. The letter therefore entered the public domain in Poland on 1 January 2015. It is also in the public domain in the United States, because (following the Hirtle chart, "Works Published Abroad After 1 January 1978"), it was first published outside the US after 1 March 1989 "in a country that has copyright relations with the US" (Hungary). For Hungary, see "International Copyright Relations of the United States", p. 7. This means the copyright term is "70 years after the death of author, or if work of corporate authorship, 95 years from publication".
