Description / Descriptions : In 1818, John Ross (1777-1856), then a commander in the Royal Navy, led his first expedition to the Canadian Arctic in search of the North-West Passage. He made another attempt in 1829 when he became ice-bound for four years, and upon his return to England was created a knight bachelor. He led his own expedition for the search of John Franklin's missing party in 1850. His published works about the Arctic are an important source of information about nineteenth-century Arctic exploration. /
