Description

Alguns historiadores afirmam desconhecer a data da sua edificação, sendo-lhe atribuídos os séculos XVII, XVIII, como prováveis da construção da capela. É, portanto, uma incógnita que persiste.

Tem um altar com imagens aderentes e dois oratórios escavados nas esquinas que se dobram um pouco além da porta principal.

Colocado num ponto elevado, tem no adro um cruzeiro de pedra mármore, assente numa base quadrada, e sobre ela uma circunferência também em mármore, com caveiras esculpidas.

Na frontaria tem cruzes de azulejos, com inscrições referentes aos Passos da Paixão.

Em tempos, fazia-se uma procissão de Portalegre até ao calvário. Os penitentes que nela tomavam parte caminhavam de cara tapada e cada qual levava o peso que julgava capaz, para aliviar o seu pecado: madeiros aos ombros, pedras e correntes presas às pernas.

Numa daquelas procissões em Portalegre, reza a história, que um penitente entrou numa pequena casa quase ao pé do calvário e deu o seu fim a um menino de berço, porque a mãe o rejeitara e casara com outro.
