Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Chapel of the Jesus Maria José Sugar Plantation, Laranjeiras, Sergipe, Brazil. "Only the chapel built in 1769 remains from the onetime sugar mill and plantation. Isolated in a cane field, it stands out due to its imposing proportions and location on higher ground, but is in ruins, entirely surrounded by the dense vegetation that also covers much of the façades. Inside, the chapel has been stripped of all its contents, which once included various carved items: two small side altars, a pulpit, a crossing arch and a high altar. The chapel ceiling is attributed to the Bahian artist José Teófilo de Jesus, probably painted in the 1840s; the subject is the Holy Family. Nowadays only the masonry remains, but still indicating the powerful presence of this chapel. [...] Due to its historical and architectural value, this chapel was listed by IPHAN in 1943, along with all its now non-existent contents."--HPIP.
Português: Capela do Antigo Engenho Jesus, Maria e José, Laranjeiras, Sergipe. [...]
