English: Capel Pont yr Arw, Llanfachraith/Llanfachraeth This Baptist chapel and its large burial ground stand on the north bank of Afon Alaw at the river's lowest bridging point. The Baptist cause in the area dates back to the 1780s and the first of a series of chapels on the site was completed in 1810. The present chapel was built in 1860. The U,S. pioneer in black education and race relations, Thomas Jesse Jones (1873-1950), who emigrated from Llanfachraith at the age of 11, is commemorated by a tablet on the wall of the chapel. |
