Summary
[edit]DescriptionCanterbury Cathedral, window n.III (36940593903).jpg |
Becket Miracle Window. Dating from around 1215, four large roundels have smaller petals within. At the top, St Thomas appears to a sleeping Monk, emerging from his higher shrine (not in the crypt, the original burial place), The cure of Roger of Valognes, cured of an injured foot, A woman at the tomb draws up her gown to reveal a green stocking, Godwin of Boxgrove, once a leper, gives his shirt as an "ex voto" offering, A woman with dropsy visits the Tomb and is cured ("She had come with bosom swollen, she returns attenuated"), The cure of the Daughters of Godbold of Boxley - they were both lame from birth, one is cured whilst asleep and they visit the shrine to give thanks and the other is also cured after appealing to the Saint. Edward of Westoning stole a pair of gloves from Fulk to make a good a debt, he is bought before a magistrate, suffered trial by water and found guilty. He is blinded and castrated as punishment ("His eyes are cut out, his members amputated") Eilward confesses his sins and is cured by St Thomas. He points to his eyes and gives money to a beggar. Walter of Lisors depicts a man riding out of the city - probably a scene from another story. At the bottom is depicted the story of The Cure of Hugh of Jervaux, seen to be dying and the physicians can do nothing, he is given the "blood of St Thomas" ("hope remains for the hopeless in the blood of the Saint") and after a nosebleed or discharge of blood, he was cured. |
