Candle holder |
||
Description |
English: Probably part of a copper alloy post-medieval candle holder dating to the late 15th/early 16th century. Only part of the rimmed, tubular fitting is left. The original object would have comprised of an elongated hexagonal sectioned cup (of which half is still present here) and integral ring. The cup would have tapered somewhat from the top to the base with raised rims to both ends - the raised rims at the bottom are still present here. It would have been perforated by a circular hole atop a rectangular slot on opposite faces; these are damaged on this object and broken out to reveal one single large perforation with ragged edges. These slots were presumably used to allow for a lever to push the candle upwards as it was used and shortened.
The object has a mottled greenish brown patina. A parallel can be found on p80 of Geoff Egan's 'Material culture in London in an age of transition': Museum of London. Similar examples which have been recorded on the PAS database include LVPL-1CDB84, LVPL-6F6FB2 and CORN-80895A. |
