Le carottier USNEL est utilisé pour l’étude de la macro faune. Cet engin permet de prélever par l’intermédiaire de boîtes métalliques, du sédiment meuble de surface, d’une épaisseur d’environ 500 mm par des profondeurs pouvant atteindre 5 000 m.

L'équipe scientifique observe et manipule le sédiment prélevé par l'engin, depuis la plage arrière de l'Atalante, lors de la mission Biozaïre 2 que l'Ifremer et le groupe TotalFinaElf ont menée du 15 novembre au 4 décembre 2001 dans le golfe de Guinée.

The USNEL corer is used for the study of macrofauna. This device allows the collection of samples, through metal boxes, of loose surface sediment, with a thickness of approximately 500 mm from depths of up to 5,000 m.

The scientific team observes and handles the sediment collected by the machine, from the aft beach of the Atalante, during the Biozaïre 2 mission that Ifremer and the TotalFinaElf group carried out from November 15 to December 4, 2001 in the Gulf of Guinea.
