| Transcript | back of card, THE ARMY IMPORTED 68 CAMELS and 10 drivers 1856-7 for freighting supplies from Texas to California. They worked OK on a trail west from Albuquerque, later Route 66. In three years the Army abandoned the experiment because Congress laughed at them. Sold to circuses and released on the desert, the beasts roamed for the next 30 years ! Hi Jolly, last of the camel drivers, died in the desert near Quartzsite, Arizona in 1902 clasping the neck of his favorite camel. His tomb stands in Quartzsite beside I-8. |
