[edit]DescriptionCallisto's Shadow - Voyager 1 (46174393895).png |
Voyager 1 image of Jupiter, taken during the departure phase of its encounter on March 13, 1979. In this image, the shadow of the outermost Galilean moon, Callisto, is just beginning its transit across the planet's cloudtops. The region beneath this shadow is experiencing a total solar eclipse. Due to the greater apparent size of Callisto relative to the Sun, as well as Jupiter's faster rotation period, regions of Jupiter's cloudtops experience longer total eclipses than Earth. On average, these eclipses last 10-15 minutes for any given location on Jupiter's "surface". This image was created using an orange/violet image with an interpolated green-channel image, acquired by the spacecraft around 2046 UT. |
