elopment had not beenseen in any of our westernsharks. Upon receipt of the shark itwas placed in a small saltwater aquarium with runningwater, where it was keptduring its development. Atvarious times the aquariumwas out of order, which madeit necessary at such times tochange the water on the fishtwo or three times a day or tomove it into another aqua-rium. It is a question whetheror not the process of develop-ment was retarded or hin-dered in any way by thesedisturbances. We are underobligation to Stanford Uni-versity and to Dr. W. K.Fisher, the director of Hop-kins IMarine Station, for theuse of the aquarium. The case, as shown in theaccompanying drawing, was116 mm. long and 49 mm.wide. One end, comprisingal)out one third of the lengthof the case, was considerablysmaller, and of a differentshape from the larger end.The acute angles of the lattermet and continued in longslender tendrils, for the pur-pose of attaching to seaweed, while similar tendrils werealso given off from the angles

The position and size of the fish and yolk,as seen through the opaque, dark brown, leathery ease, are indicatedin the drawing by broken lines. The fisli was probably very young, for its lengtli at the time of receiving was 43 mm., which exceededthe yolk by only 3 mm. The egg ease had growing on it at eachend colonies of bryozoans, which died and had soaked off by the end offour months. At first there were no apertures in the case which could be detected, although each end contained two slight grooves, shown in the figure, situated on opposite sides of the case. To one facing the egg case, with the smaller end up, one groove was visible at each end on theleft hand side. The other two groovasi could not be seen withoutturning the case over, which would bring them on the left hand side.Tho.se at the larger end were about 20
