DescriptionCafe Scoopy Doo.jpg |
English: In Finland the letter B is sometimes known as the "Royal P." There is no B in the Finnish language, but Swedish has it. Finland was long part of the Kingdom of Sweden, and I think something like 10% of the population still speaks Swedish as their primary language. If you pronounce P and B in succession you'll note your lip movements are extremely similar, but one if voiced and the other is not.
The lack of B leads to some amusing episodes, like when we first met Päivi. We thought her name was pronounced "Bivy" for about a month. And then you have things like Cafe Scoopy Doo. Ruoholahdenkatu 16, Helsinki, Finland. Helsinki, 2001 |
