Notes Many German and Dutch cabinet makers were encouraged to come to England after the accession of a Dutch king - William III. They introduced new methods of construction and made lighter and elegant forms using elaborate turned legs and C-scroll braces to create optical richness and a sense of movement though the play of light and shadow. Pewter was used as an inlay in fine quality furniture in a technique known as contre-partie. It flourished in furniture making because pewter was relatively malleable and easy to work. Tables, cabinets and doors containing intricate inlaid patterns in pewter provided a colour contrast with other inlays, possibly to imitates or as an alternative to silver, brass and types of wood.
