Nederlands: De houten beelden van de Luba-Hemba kunnen in twee groepen worden verdeeld: de fetisjbeelden (mikisi mihake), die een magische betekenis hebben en de voorouderbeelden (mikisi mihasi), die dienen ter 'verering' van de overledenen. De figuren van de eerste groep zijn in het algemeen klein van formaat en vertonen een holte (op het hoofd of op de buik) waarin magische stof wordt gedaan. Onderhavig beeld behoort tot de tweede groep van sculpturen die groter van afmeting zijn (50-100 cm) en geen holte voor magische stoffen bevatten. Zij worden in het algemeen staand weergegeven. Voorstellingen van vrouwen zijn veruit in de meerderheid en vertonen tatoeages. Beelden van mannen zijn in het algemeen niet getatoeëerd. Volgens Leuzinger (1962:172) stellen vrouwelijke beelden meestal moeder aarde voor en de mannelijke stamhelden. |
